Private Thomas Leslie Starcevich enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in April 1941. In December 1941 he joined the 2/43rd Battalion, 24th Brigade, 9th Division in Palestine.

In April 1945, the 9th Division left for Borneo in the closing months of World War 11. There in Beaufort town and with his unit under fire from the enemy, Starcevich displayed tremendous bravery when he twice approached enemy fire, rushing forward and firing from his Bren gun. With the enemy machine-gun posts knocked out, his ‘B' Company was able to continue their assault.

Thomas L. Starcevich was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and on 28th August 1947, he received his Victoria Cross medal at Western Australia where he eventually returned to farming. He is buried in the Esperance Public Lawn Cemetery, Western Australia.

After the War, the road where the action took place was named Victoria Cross Road by the local townsfolk and a Memorial Stone was erected along it. It is located just near the present-day Beaufort Police station. The inscription on it reads ‘In June 1945, on this hill, by his valour and disregard of danger, Private L.T Starcevich of 2/43rd Battalion A.I.F (Australian Imperial Forces), routed the Japanese defenders.'

Beaufort town is an hour and a half away from Kota Kinabalu City and you can take a bus, self-drive or take a leisurely two hour diesel train ride. You can also contact a local tour operator. Please check under the Directory section.

By train, board from the Tanjung Aru Train Station. Fares are RM4.80 one way.
Schedule Departure : Mon - Sun 7.45am , Sun 1.35pm.
Return from Beaufort : Mon - Sun 9.55am , Sun 10am

You can take a Mini Bus from the Bus Station in front of Wawasan Plaza in KK City with departures throughout the day, starting from early morning. A one-way fare is RM5.00.

Maliau Basin conservation area are one of Malaysia's finest wilderness areas. From 1999 until 2003 a joint project with Danish International Development Assistance (DANIDA) resulted in basic infrastructures, the establish of Maliau Basin studies center, baseline research and strategic management plan for the area.

Maliau Basin conservation area also known as Sabah's Lost World, a 584 square kilometre Class 1 Protection forest reserved and one of Malaysia's finest wilderness areas, comprising a high plateau surrounded by a formidable escrapment and containing outstanding natural features such as the popular 7-tiered Maliau Falls and numerous smaller waterfall.

Situated in south central of Sabah, this virtually self-contained ecosystem is drained by one river only, the Maliau river which flow out of a gorge in the south east of the basin and forms one of the headwaters of the Kinabatangan river.

Maliau contains unusual forest type including rare montane heat forest and distinc and divers flora with over 1800 species of plant so far identified. Along with the surrounding forest it is also home to rare mammals such as banteng, clouded leopard and Malayan sunbear and more than 275 species of bird.

Danum Valley conservation area is one of Sabah's last strongholds of lowland dipterocarp forest. Danum valley field centre is a world renowed facility for tropical rainforest research. A major collaborative programme with the United Kingdom royal society and other joint initiatives have generated over 330 studies and involved the training of local and oversea students.

Danum Valley conservation area, a 438 square kilometers Class 1 Protection Forest Reserved and one of the Borneo's last strongholds of the lowland diptercorp forest which used to cover most of northern Borneo.

With tree species numbering over 200 per hectare, it is among the oldest and richest rainforest in the world. These majestic forests with trees reaching over 60 meter tall provide a vital refuge to some of Sabah's most endangered wildlife such as Orang Utan, Sumatran rhino, proboscis monkey and Asian elephant also over 300 species of birds.

Situated in the heart of the conservation area, Mount Danum at 1093 meter high, is the tallest peak and surrounded by sub-mountane forest.

Atkinson Clock Tower at Kota Kinabalu Sabah

One of the most enduring landmarks in Kota Kinabalu, it stands prominently on a bluff along Signal Hill Road adjacent to the old Police Station.

Built in 1903, this all-wood, no-nails structure was built in memory of Francis George Atkinson - the popular first District Officer of Jesselton during the

British North Borneo Chartered Company Administration, who had succumbed to a tropical disease at the young age of 28.
This Clock Tower has the distinction of being the oldest standing structure in the whole of Sabah that survived the destruction of Jesselton town during World War II. Till today, it still serves to keep the city's time.

The Atkinson Clock Tower is managed by the Sabah Museum under its Antiquity and History section.

Getting There
You can stroll there or take any taxi. From the bottom of Signal Hill Road (Jalan Bukit Bendera) at Padang Merdeka, turn left to get to the clock site. Or view it from the city.

Dendrobium datinconnieae - New Species Orchid found in Mount Kinabalu
Kota Kinabalu: A new species of orchid was discovered recently on Mount Kinabalu and the Crocker Range.

This species, Dendrobium datinconnieae, has been named in honour of Datin Connie Wong Mui Yun, a Director of Kota Kinabalu-based Natural History Publications, which has been responsible for many authoritative books on the biodiversity of Sabah and the Malesian region.

It also publishes the bi-annual Malesian Orchid Journal.

This unusually outstanding species of Dendrobium was also described in the most recent issue of Malesian Orchid Journal by botanist Jeffrey Wood, Curator of the Orchid Herbarium at the world-renowned Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London.

The stems of this beautiful epiphytic species attain 35cm in length, the short inflorescences bearing three to five large yellow flowers usually borne on the older, pendulous leafless growths. A much rarer, orange-flowered form is only found in the Sayap area of Kinabalu Park.

Nearly 1,000 species of native orchid have been recorded in Sabah - which is about two-thirds of the entire orchid flora of Borneo. More than 800 species are found on Mount Kinabalu alone, 90 of which are endemic to the mountain.

The richness of Sabah's orchid flora is reflected in the continual emergence of new species, and taxonomists in renowned botanical institutions in Europe have been systematically describing them over the past two decades.

The announcement of this new species is particularly timely as the much anticipated Borneo Orchid Show, jointly organised by the Borneo Orchid Society Sabah, Ministry of Tourism Malaysia, Sabah Tourism Board and City Hall will be held from Oct. 1 to 5 at the Suria Sabah, Sabah Tourism Board Chairman cum Borneo Orchid Society President, Tengku Dato' Seri Zainal Adlin.

The show is also of particular significance as it is organised during the World Tourism Conference when several hundreds of key tourism players from all over the world would be here.

A one-day seminar is also being organised on the orchids of Borneo and the Malesian region which will place strong emphasis on their conservation in South East Asia.

Seven experts in various disciplines from Denmark, the Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong, as well as the capital, have been invited to speak on their specialist subjects.

We now are at the end of year 2008. I was think that time passed very fast due to business and lots of entertainment around.

My friends told me that she never go to 1 Borneo Hypermall, so i accompany her to there. After entering the sliding door i found that there is somuch improvement since my last visit 2 months ago (i think).

So i have to explain to her one by one.

1 Borneo Hypermall label as three division even though the building are not separate, namely North Atrium, Center Atrium and South Atrium.

There is no special meaning for that terms but just to differentiate which one is north, center and south. Just in case your friends or child lost somewhere inside the building you know where to wait or make an instruction. As we know 1Borneo is a largest Hypermall in Sabah (Borneo) Malaysia, so newcomer may lost with their friends.

KOTA KINABALU: 1Borneo, a hypermall that houses internationally and regionally-recognised brands, is poised to place Sabah on the map and elevate Kota Kinabalu’s status as a premier shopping destination in the region.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said with world-class and regional reputable brands, the establishment of Tune Hotel and Golden Screen Cinemas, the hypermall would certainly emerge as a new, exciting tourism product for Sabah.

“1Borneo is indeed a positive development for Kota Kinabalu City. The outlets in IBorneo reflect the tastes and lifestyle of the people here.

“Of course this is a good start for developing Sabah as a premier shopping destination, thus complementing the state’s tourism attractions,” he told reporters after officiating at the soft opening of 1Borneo in Likas, near here, yesterday.

Musa, who is also State Finance Minister, thanked 1Borneo’s developer Sagajuta (Sabah) for being able to complete the project within three years.

Earlier, in his speech, the Chief Minister said the state government was actively promoting tourism to further boost the local economy and create opportunities for the people.

“Our state is one that is blessed as we have a range of natural sites and rich culture for travellers from all over the world to enjoy.

“We have one of the best diving spots in the world at Pulau Sipadan and we also have Mount Kinabalu for the adventure seekers. However, there are some tourists who prefer shopping holidays and 1Borneo is one such product that caters for them.”

Musa said tourism receipts were projected to increase from RM2.88 billion in 2006 to a whopping RM48.5 billion in 2025.

“We are confident that by diversifying our tourism products, this figure is within reach at the end of the 18-year Sabah Development Corridor period,” he said.

Later, Musa officially opened RHB Bank Berhad’s new branch at 1Borneo.

Meanwhile, Giant Hypermarket at 1Borneo, a world-class hypermarket that was set up at a cost of RM20 million, opened its doors to Sabahans yesterday.

Giant, an anchor tenant at 1Borneo, stocks over 100,000 items of fresh food, daily essentials and consumer goods while being committed to offering low prices, big variety and great value.

GCH Retail Sdn Bhd marketing director Ho Mun Hao said its investment in 1Borneo created 350 jobs as well as generated business opportunities for traders and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

AirAsia affiliated Tune Ventures Sdn Bhd is establishing a major presence in Borneoâ€™s shopping centre by opening its first department store and a 166-room hotel at the 1Borneo mega mall.Â Tune Venturesâ€™ flagship retail outlet to be called Tune Store will occupy a 9,300sq m area in the massive mall which is scheduled to open by April 2008.Â

â€œWe are targeting the middle income earners with our extensive selection of merchandise for discerning shoppers,â€ Tune Store director Dennis Melka said after the signing of an agreement between Tune Ventures and Sagajuta Sdn Bhd, 1Borneoâ€™s developer for the establishment of the retail outlet.Â

The event was witnessed by state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjum.Â

Melka said Tune Ventures had decided to open its first retail outlet in Kota Kinabalu due to the cityâ€™s rapid growth and the quality infrastructure offered at 1Borneo.Â

Tune Hotels chief executive Mark Lankester said the companyâ€™s property at 1Borneo would see various improvements including offering optional hair dryers and LCD television sets to guests.Â

â€œRoom additions include a safe, bedside table with LED bedside lamps and sound-proof doors,â€ he added.Â

Masidi said the presence of the Tune Store and Tune Hotel would boost the city as a destination of choice for tourists.Â

â€œWe may not have a large number of malls but we do have 1Borneo and other shopping centres and we also have the clean air, the mountain and islands.Â

â€œIn other words Sabah will have something for everyone,â€ said Masidi.
